For many small business owners, finding capital can feel like navigating a maze. Traditional lenders often require strong credit profiles, extensive operating history, significant collateral, or financial metrics that emerging businesses may not yet possess. While conventional financing remains an important option, it is not always the right fit or the most accessible pathway for every entrepreneur.

Recognizing this challenge, Cook County has expanded its commitment to small business growth through the Cook County Small Business Source, strengthening a network of Community Financial Institutions (CFIs) that specialize in serving businesses that may be underserved by traditional financing channels. Through a recent investment of $2.4 million in CFI capacity-building funding, Cook County has helped these organizations increase their lending capacity and expand support services available to local entrepreneurs.

What makes this initiative especially meaningful is that it focuses on more than simply providing loans. These organizations combine financing with technical assistance, business coaching, and individualized guidance designed to help entrepreneurs succeed over the long term. By connecting with the Berwyn Development Corporation (BDC) team, businesses can be connected to the lender that best aligns with their needs and stage of development.

Who Are These Capital Partners?

The Source’s preferred lending network includes several respected organizations serving Cook County businesses:

  • Allies for Community Business (A4CB) provides capital, coaching, and business connections internally and through SBA lending programs.
  • Jewish Free Loan Chicago (JFLC) offers a unique approach to financing by providing zero-interest small business loans up to $20,000. Designed as an alternative to high-interest borrowing, these loans can help businesses fund working capital, expansion efforts, and operational needs.
  • Greater Auburn-Gresham Development Corporation (GAC) combines flexible small business lending with technical assistance to support entrepreneurship and neighborhood economic development.
  • Pursuit brings more than 70 years of lending experience and offers a variety of responsible financing options and advisory services designed for businesses at different stages of growth.
  • SomerCor specializes in SBA 504 financing for commercial real estate and equipment purchases while also administering several notable grant programs, including SBIF and NOF.
  • Women’s Business Development Center (WBDC) supports women and diverse business owners through business coaching, contracting opportunities, and capital access programs.

Why This Matters for Small Business Owners

The BDC regularly works with entrepreneurs seeking capital to start, stabilize, or expand their businesses. Our first goal is always to help business owners identify the financing option that best fits their circumstances. In many cases, local community banks and traditional lending institutions remain excellent partners and should absolutely be part of the conversation.

However, we also recognize that not every business is bank-ready, or eligible for traditional opportunities.

That’s where these CFI’s play an important role. Their flexible underwriting approaches, mission-driven focus, and commitment to small business development can create opportunities for owners and operators that may need additional support before qualifying for conventional financing. In many cases, these organizations help bridge the gap, enabling businesses to build credit, strengthen financial systems, and prepare for future lending opportunities.

Expanding Our Resource Network

The BDC views these organizations as trusted partners that strengthen the entrepreneurial ecosystem throughout Cook County. While we continue to encourage business owners to build relationships with local financial institutions whenever possible, these CFI’s provide valuable alternatives that help us serve a broader range of businesses and financing needs.

Simply put, more pathways to capital create more opportunities for success.

Whether you’re seeking startup funding, working capital, equipment financing, real estate acquisition support, or simply want to better understand your financing options, The Source’s lending network offers another set of tools that business owners should have in their resource toolbox.
